Danie Matthee elected chair of South African Insurance Association

Johannesburg - The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has today announced the election of Mr Danie Matthee as Chairperson of the SAIA Board following a Board meeting held on Thursday 17 September 2026.

Mr Matthee, who previously served as SAIA Deputy Chairperson, is the CEO of OUTsurance Insurance. He joined OUTsurance in 2002 and has held various leadership positions within the company, including CEO of OUTsurance and OUTsurance Life as well as CEO of Youi Insurance in Australia.

At the same Board meeting, Mr Mohamed Motala was appointed Deputy Chairperson. Mr Motala joined SCOR SE Africa Branch, a leading global reinsurer, in 2008 and currently serves as the company's CEO. He has 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry and previously held roles at Credit Guarantee Insurance Corporation of Africa, Swiss Re Africa and Absa Insurance Company.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Matthee said, “I am honoured by the confidence the SAIA Board has placed in me. Insurance matters most when things go wrong, and our responsibility is to remain relevant, affordable and trusted. I look forward to working with Mohamed, the Board, Management and our industry partners to build a sustainable and innovative industry that serves South Africans well.”

SAIA congratulates Mr Matthee and Mr Motala on their appointments and looks forward to their leadership and continued contribution to the Association and the non-life insurance industry.

SAIA also extends its sincere appreciation to Mr Thusang Mahlangu, the outgoing Chairperson and Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty South Africa CEO, for his leadership and dedicated service to the Association. During his tenure, Mr Mahlangu provided valuable leadership to the SAIA Board and supported the Association in advancing its mandate to represent and advance the interests of the non-life insurance industry.
