Liberty gears up for health screenings at the 2025 Cape Town Cycle Tour
Johannesburg - The Cape Town Cycle Challenge, one of the most iconic cycling events in Africa, is set to take centre stage once again on 9 March 2025, attracting thousands of participants and spectators.
This year, the event will feature a dedicated health activation zone, hosted by Liberty, in collaboration with its longstanding partner, CANSA. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups and the early detection of critical health conditions.
Liberty will offer free health screenings to participants and attendees, focusing on three key areas:
-
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Testing: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in South Africa and the leading cause of cancer-related claims by men, according to Liberty's 2023 Claim Statistics. Early detection through PSA testing can significantly improve treatment outcomes and save lives.
-
FotoFinder Mole Mapping: Skin cancer, particularly melanoma, is a growing concern in South Africa. FotoFinder mole mapping technology will be available to help individuals identify suspicious moles or skin lesions, promoting early intervention and prevention.
-
Glucose and Blood Pressure Testing: Uncontrolled blood sugar levels and high blood pressure can lead to serious health complications, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Liberty will provide free glucose and blood pressure tests to help individuals monitor their health and make informed decisions about lifestyle adjustments.
These screenings form part of Liberty's broader mission to empower South Africans to take proactive steps toward their health and wellbeing. Annually, Liberty offers health screenings at designated locations, including shopping malls across the country.
"We typically include checks for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and BMI, aiming to promote proactive health management that can assist in the early detection and prevention of life-threatening conditions," says Marees Bostander, Head of Brand and Sponsorship at Liberty, the insurance and asset management arm of Standard Bank Group.
"While our core business is insuring and protecting what matters most—families, loved ones, assets, and businesses—prioritising one's health is just as important. We believe that good health is the foundation of a fulfilling life," adds Bostander.
"We hope to inspire not only the participants and families of the Cape Town Cycle Challenge but also more South Africans to prioritise their health and take proactive steps toward their wellbeing."
"Events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour highlight the importance of wellbeing, not just for individuals but also for the professionals and businesses that support healthcare services. As part of the broader Standard Bank Group ecosystem, Liberty's commitment to physical health aligns with Standard Bank Business & Commercial Banking's (BCB's) focus on supporting the financial wellbeing of businesses in the healthcare sector. From preferential banking rates and medical equipment financing to malpractice insurance and practice management solutions, Standard Bank also empowers healthcare professionals to start, manage, and grow sustainable practices that contribute to the wellbeing of communities across South Africa," says John Van Kan, Head of Healthcare Sector at Business & Commercial Banking, Standard Bank South Africa.
The health activation zone will be open to participants, supporters, and spectators throughout the event.
"Whether you're a cyclist tackling the route or a supporter on the sidelines, we encourage you to take a moment to get checked and learn more about the importance of early detection and preventive care," says Bostander.
